Manchester Auditory Implant Centre

Central Manchester University Hospitals, United Kingdom

Center Description

The Auditory Implant Centre in Manchester was established in 1988 and was the first centre in the UK to offer multichannel implants. The Centre has since grown to be a world-renowned centre of excellence in the field of cochlear implantation.

The Centre comprises three teams: Adult, Adolescent and Paediatric. It was one of the first implant centres in the UK to recognise the need for a service specifically aimed at the adolescent population. The Adolescent Programme was established in 1997. To date (2013), the Manchester Auditory Implant Centre has provided implants to over 1500 patients with an age range of 6 months to 91 years.

The Auditory Implant Centre provides a comprehensive implantation service incorporating cochlear implants, middle ear implants, auditory brainstem implants, and BAHA. Manchester has developed significant experience in hearing preservation surgery and currently has the largest series in the UK. In the field of middle ear implant surgery, the centre specialises in novel applications of VSB and was the first clinic in the UK to undertake a paediatric case.

The centre has a strong track record in both clinical and translational research, and there are strong research collaborations between the clinical and academic partners.
