1. Sound information travels into the ear canal
  2. When the sound reaches the ear drum, it causes the drum to vibrate.
  3. Sound vibrations move through the chain of bones, known as the ossicles, to the cochlea.
  4. Sound vibrations cause the fluid in the cochlea to move.
  5. The movement of the fluid causes the hair cells to bend back and forth. This action creates neural signals, which are picked up by the auditory nerve. Hair cells at one end of the cochlea send low pitch sound information and hair cells at the other end send high pitch sound information.
  6. The auditory nerve sends the sound information to the brain, where it is interpreted as sound.
