Towards a Consensus on Hearing and Structure Preservation in Cochlear Implantation Surgery

🎉We are proud to share that HEARRING members have collaborated on a new publication on one of our key focus topic, Hearing and Structure Preservation in Cochlear Implantation Surgery.

This new international HEARRING survey of 31 experts from 16 countries shows a growing consensus that hearing and structure preservation (HSP) should be a goal for all cochlear implant patients, not only those with residual hearing.

Experts strongly agreed on key atraumatic surgical techniques, including slow insertion, flexible electrodes, round-window access, and intraoperative corticosteroids. The findings are an important step toward more standardized HSP practice, with training, technology, and international collaboration remaining key priorities.

As next, we have launched a fantastic course dedicated to Otosclerosis comprising five talks by PhD Ellen Andries, PhD Mohammad Al Saadi, Prof. Dr. Mohan Kameswaran, Prof. Dr. Piotr Skarzynski and Prof. Dr. Artur Lorens. This course focuses on the topic of “Otosclerosis and Hearing Implant Solutions”. It was recorded during the Fifth International Symposium on Otosclerosis and Stapes Surgery in Brussels in April of 2023.

The third release this month is truly special in its comprehensiveness! It consists of our experts’ presentations recordings from the European Symposium for Paediatric Cochlear Implantation, which took place in May 2023 in Rotterdam, and is titled “Quality Standards and Treatment of Severe Hearing Loss in Adults”.

In this course Prof. Luis Lassaletta Atienza looks into the WHO Hearing Report and its six main action items. Prof. Abdulrahman Hagr talks about the concept of standards in the context of clinical practice. Dr. Anja Kurz elaborates on the importance of creating HEARRING quality standards and minimal outcome measures. Prof. Piotr H. SkarĆŒyƄski dives into the process of adult hearing screening and the possibilities of moving forward. Prof. Griet Mertens looks into the effect of Cochlear Implantation on the cognitive decline in severely hearing-impaired older adults.

It’s our great pleasure to announce a very interesting event for this year – 15th International Facial Nerve Symposium! It will be held in Madrid from the 24th till 27th of September 2025.

This event will provide an exceptional platform for deepening the understanding of the facial nerve disorders, diagnosis, and treatment modalities. Over four days, a wide range of topics will be covered related to facial paralysis, from fundamental principles to cutting-edge advancements.

Supported by the Sir Charles Bell Society, the symposium will feature presentations and posters structured into panels, along with video surgical presentations, keynote lectures, and hands-on sessions. For younger physicians and residents, there will be a specific junior’s path as well as mentor sessions with experienced facial nerve experts.

  It will take place in Zoom on the 7th of February at 12:00 CET.
