Minimal outcome measurements in pediatric cochlear implant users

a consensus paper

HEARRING is proud to announce that our paper on Minimal Outcome Measurements in pediatric cochlear implant users has been published in B-ENT periodical! It was written by our distinguished experts including Griet Mertens, Paul Van de Heyning, Vincent Van Rompaey, Maria Fernanda Di Gregorio, Robert H. Eikelboom, Roberta Marino, Anja Kurz, Artur Lorens, Sasidharan Pulibalathingal , Ranjith Rajeswaran, Dayse Tavora-Vieira, Vedat Topsakal and other honorable members of our group.

The benefits of cochlear implantation in children with severe hearing impairments are widely known. However, there is no consensus regarding which minimal outcome measurements should be used to determine outcomes in this population with pediatric cochlear implant. Therefore, the authors aim to propose a MOM test battery for pediatric CI recipients that can facilitate international multicenter research and collaboration.

This remarkable study presents a consensus on a MOM test battery for pediatric CI recipients that was agreed upon by members of the HEARRING group. To view and download the publication click the button below:

Cognitive Improvement After Cochlear Implantation

with Severe or Profound Hearing Impairment

HEARRING is always delighted to share new publications co-authored by the members of our group. It gives us an opportunity not only to spread the latest research outcomes, but also to inspire more prospective studies in the field of auditory science. The theme of our latest research paper is Cognitive Improvement after Cochlear Implantation in Older Adults with Severe or Profound Hearing Impairment. It has been published in the Journal of Ear & Hearing this year. The nature of the study design is truly exceptional, being prospective, longitudinal, controlled and multicenter.

The study involves such prominent HEARRING members, as Griet Mertens, Vedat Topsakal, Paul Van de Heyning, Vincent Van Rompaey, Miryam Calvino, Javier Gavilán, Piotr Henryk Skarżyński, Henryk Skarżyński, Christopher Raine, Dayse Tavora-Vieira, Roberta Marino, Aanand Acharya and Luis Lassaletta

According to the results of the study, improvements of the overall cognitive functioning and attention were observed after cochlear implantation in the intervention group. Moreover, significant positive effects of cochlear implantation on sound quality and self-perceived hearing outcomes were found in the intervention group. However, older CI users did not, in terms of cognition, bridge the performance gap with adults with normal hearing after one year of CI use. The fact that experienced, older CI users still present subnormal cognitive functioning may highlight the need for additional cognitive rehabilitation in the long term after implantation.

Setting New Standards in COVID-19 Era

Round Table Discussion Covid Hearring

Online

Numerous events have been cancelled all around the world due to the spread of COVID-19. However, HEARRING network members found a way to stay connected and maintain the co-active spirit even in those challenging times. An online round table discussion took place on May 23rd focusing on the extremely relevant topic of “Setting New Standards in Clinical Practice in the COVID-19 Era”. The discussion was moderated by our renowned expert Prof. Mohan Kameswaran and the board of speakers included such outstanding professionals as Prof. Wolf-Dieter Baumgartner, Prof. Joachim Müller, Prof. Javier Gavilán Bouzas, Prof. Vedat Topsakal, Prof. Vlad Kuzovkov and Prof. Manoj Manikoth.

As a result, the following has been conveyed: Cochlear Implant surgery is not an elective surgery. In some cases it’s an emergency surgery. For example, in the case of neuro-linguistic emergencies, when children are suffering from bilateral severe to profound deafness in the timeframe of high plasticity of the brain, the surgery shall not be delayed for more than one month. See below, to join the full event and to find out more about the main conclusions in the picture gallery.
